Things To Do While You Spend Your Vacation In Venice

April 7th, 2009 No comments

Venice is one of the most gorgeous cities in the world and has canals, gondolas and remarkable architecture. If you have a plan to visit this city, try to visit it in spring or fall to avoid the heat and tourist crowds. Whilst in Venice, you can do a lot of sightseeing activities like going to churches, museums, and other tourist attractions. You can also attend many events and other activities that are exclusive to this city.

The Voga Longa is a rowing competition which is held annually on the last day of May. The distance that has to be covered by rowing is 32 kilometers, and this should be completed in less than three and a half hours in order to get a certificate. However, if you do not want a certificate, you can still take part for fun and take it as far as you wish as long as you are in a human-powered vessel. This rowing race in fact originated as a protest against the power boats that were taking over the canals, but has now turned into a festival. The racetrack passes through most of Venice, and people group along the canals to cheer up the participants.

The Regata ‘Storica is held in September on the first Sunday of the month. This commemorates an event that took place in 1489 by presenting about one hundred types of Venetian boats. In addition there are races, competitions, and other opportunities for people to be a part of.

Whilst in Venice, do not forget to take a ride on the Water Bus called Vaporetto at the time of sunset. The gorgeous sight is filled with the soft sunset light providing a mesmerizing picture, and is one of the best ways to remember Venice.

Whilst a Gondola is costly, anywhere between 80 Euros to 150 Euro you can negotiate the price down to the lower amount if you are really interested in having a ride. This is in reality a true Venetian experience, thus it is a good idea to budget for this prior to your trip, and make sure you go for the ride. The best way to negotiate the price as low as possible and then walk away, which will often be followed by at least one gondolier would come after you and reduce the cost further. The discounted rate might get you less time, and fewer sights, so bargain this with the gondolier before you get in.

If you are not interested in a gondola ride, then you can cross the Grand Canal via traghetto. These are not at all expensive and are basically gondolas that are too old to be used for that reason. You can also pay a visit to the Rialto Bridge and the open air markets next to it along with the Pescheria (fish market).

In addition you can spend a day on one of the islands (like Murano or Burano) which could be reached via the many boat services. The Glass Museum in Murano should not be missed as is the Lace Museum in Burano. However, even just walking around on these islands is a very good experience, and sitting at a caf and relaxing is also a good idea.

Venice is a stunning city, so make sure you make the most of your excursion and plan it in advance so you can budget for the activities you certainly want to involve yourself in.

Sight Seeing in Italy

February 23rd, 2009 No comments

Once in a while, every individual deserves a break from the intensive work load in the office. The ideal scenario for a break would be a nice long vacation in an attractive and culturally rich part of the world with one’s friends and family. There really is nothing like a good vacation to relax those over worked nerves and take a moment to enjoy and appreciate life, rather than just being a machine working 24/7 without any rest or relaxation.

When it comes to vacations, what better place to spend one’s vacations would be than some place historically rich in culture? Especially for those who are interested in history, historic events, and landmarks. Italy is one of the oldest and most culturally rich places of the world. The existence of civilization in various parts of Italy predates the Roman and Greek civilizations.

There are many historic places to visit in Italy, in fact it wouldn’t be wrong to say that to absorb the entire cultural heritage of Italy one would need more than a life time. Never the less, Italy is a great vacation spot and with all the historic buildings and landmarks, no one would ever say otherwise. Rome and Venice are home to many historic buildings. Furthermore, following are some of the must see historic buildings in Italy.

The first place to visit in Rome would be the Pantheon, as it is one of the most remarkable and historic buildings in Rome. It was built around 126 AD by the emperor, and was intended to be an open temple for people to worship the gods of their belief. Later around the 7th century, it was converted into a Christian church.

The colosseum is an additional wonder of history in Rome. It was built in the last quarter of the first century and was considered to be the largest amphitheatre in Rome. It was used to host wild and cruel games, and in the days of its fame almost 50,000 people would fill the colosseum to see these violent games. There is not enough left of the colosseum at present, but it still attracts a lot of tourists from around the world. In the early 18th century a further great structure was built in Rome i.e. the Spanish Steps. There are a total of 138 steps presently leading from Piazza di Spagna up to Church of Trinit dei Monti.

Venice, one more rich in culture city of Italy, is home to many historic buildings and landmarks. These constructions include the famous Fondaco dei Turchi, The Rialto Bridge, The House of Carlo Goldoni, Palazzo Ducale, and Ca’ d’Oro and Ca’ Rezzonico. These landmarks should not be missed by anyone who visits Italy as they hold an immense amount of culture and history in them.

Fondaco dei Turchi meaning the Turks warehouse is one of the oldest constructions of Italy. It was built by Gaicamo Palmieri, the initiator of one of the respectable families in Italy, and was later on rented to the Turks of the Ottoman Empire in the 17th century for trading purposes, hence getting the name of Fondaco dei Turchi.

The Rialto Bride is an additional historic building of Venice. It was originally constructed around the 4th quarter of the 12th century, but was ruined several times until its final version was built with stone which has survived the test of time. This last version was built around the 16th century, and is around 8 meter high.

Get Accommodations In The Best Areas Of Rome For Tourists

Renting apartments for your visit to Rome is an excellent alternative to hotel stays. You might find choosing one of these great units a little difficult, however.

If you’re not certain what apartment you want or what area you’re most interested in staying near, here’s some information to help you choose. It can be a real help to learn about all your options and the areas you can pick from.

Spanish Steps This area is filled with elegance, and is host to many high end restaurants, designer stores, and well known bars and clubs. That doesn’t mean it’s a tourist trap, though – there are plenty of upscale Roman households in this neighborhood.

Piazza Navona While this area can be very touristy by day, it quiets down a little at night. There are still some great restaurants and bars available, and the streets in this neighborhood offer a number of unique boutiques.

Campo de Fiori Known for its fantastic outdoor market, this area is a wonderful people-watching spot. In the summer, you’ll find the piazza has a party-like atmosphere, and is filled to the brim with people enjoying the great weather.

Trastavere Known for its excellent restaurants and bars, this is a peaceful area in morning, and livelier after nightfall. Great for strolls in the daytime, Trastavere offers old fashioned cobbled streets and beautiful scenery.

Colosseum The Monti neighborhood near the Colosseum is one of the oldest in Rome, and offers apartments in a homelike setting. Enjoy a trip to the forum or the old trattorias, or take a walk down the old fashioned cobblestone streets.

Vatican This is a middle class area near the Vatican itself, and while it’s busy during the day, it’s quite peaceful at night. Inexpensive and pleasant, this area is a great choice for apartment rental if you’re in Rome primarily to see the Vatican.

Via Veneto Opened in the late nineteenth century, this road was intended to offer high class accommodations, trendy cafes and elegant shopping. It’s one of the most attractive areas in Rome, is close to all the biggest attractions, and is a great place for luxury apartment rental.

Aventino A peaceful suburb lined with trees, Aventino offers many older buildings and beautiful villas. It’s inexpensive, near Trastavere and Testaccio, and makes a great spot if you want a peaceful stay.

Borghese Gardens Offering inexpensive rentals for vacation apartments, this area has attractive scenery and good connections to the public transportation system.

Termini An exciting area that offers many newly renovated structures (including elevators, which are rare in Rome), Termini gives you plenty to see and do. It’s also close to public transport.

While these aren’t all the places for a great apartment rental in Rome, they’re some of your best options. Whether you’re looking for a bustling area that has plenty of attractions or a quieter neighborhood for a peaceful vacation, you’ll have no trouble finding what you’re after.

Enjoy The Magic of Christmas in Venice

November 22nd, 2008 No comments

No Christmas is like what the one you can experience in Venice. This city is unique and the magic atmosphere of Christmas makes it ever more special. You will not see massive amounts of decoration but magnificent sites that normally you won’t see at home.

You will be amazed by the brightly painted red boat/gondola carrying Santa down the canal lit up with many magical lights. Christmas trees are usually small and skinny.

This is true due to the fact that they are usually brought home in small boats (not cars) and then carried up several flights of stairs. Disposing of Christmas trees in Venice is a highly specialized trade, almost a science.

We suggest to attend the midnight mass at St. Mark’s Basilica at Christmas Eve, it starts at 10:30 p.m. and you should get there early to get a seat (no tickets needed).

Try to enter through the north entrance and not the west entrance often used by tourists. The square is fully lit with lights and the cool brisk air adds magic to the atmosphere, with the canal water splashing away in the background.

In Piazza San Marco, you’ll find the famous “Caff? Florian” open on Christmas Day as well. A good place for Christmas breakfast and coffee in the morning! Every year on December 26th, the Frari Church in Campo dei Frari (San Polo) offers a free concert at 4:00 p.m.

The church is filled with impressive art, including Titian’s Assumption of the Virgin, Canova’s Tomb and a carved monk’s chair from 1468. The music is magnificent. Get there early and dress warmly. The Christmas services differ from church to church. The larger ones are well worth seeing whatever your religion is.

During the days before Christmas and the day after you will see many markets around the Rialto Bridge area. Some are selling antiques, others are selling spices and food from all over Italy and souvenirs from Venice you would buy as presents and bring home to your loved ones.

Parents carrying their children on the shoulders or in their arms pointing and smiling and the overall Venice Christmas atmosphere make this site worth a stroll.

On December 26th more than on the 25th lots of shops and places are closed and it is better to plan ahead and make Dinner reservations for your Christmas.

During this time the weather varies as there are lots of cloudy days with mild temperatures or brilliant blue skies. The air is crystal clear and brisk. On these days, Venice is so perfectly reflected in the water that it is easy to mistake one world from the other.

Venice is definitely the best place where to be to spend a “magic” and unique Christmas!!
