Some Of The Grandest Baseball Stadiums In The World

July 14th, 2010 No comments

Going on a road trip to see new baseball stadiums is an awesome way for fans to travel and see their favorite sport in one stop. There are many stadiums that are blended into downtown areas and give fans the opportunity to see a game and then check out the city after the game is over. Over the last decade, this has become more and more popular.

There are a lot of clubs that designed their parks for this purpose. Fans of these teams tend to be pretty happy with this movement. The next time you plan on going to a game, think about where it is at and give time to check out the city after the game.

Look at Coors Field in Denver for example. It is a modern and popular stadium that is also in a great part of the country. When architects and developers designed the new stadium, downtown Denver was kind of run down. Once it opened, the areas surrounding the stadium underwent a renaissance and the whole area noticed significant improvement.

After the stadium opened up for business, the downtown area became a very popular stop for tourists as well as locals. The breweries in the neighborhood opened up pubs while stores and restaurants started to thrive. Not to mention that the most popular pedestrian mall in Denver is a short few blocks from the stadium.

Next, just take a look at AT&T Park in San Francisco. This attraction has become the home for the Giants since 2000. This part of town is very spirited and popular and has a wide selection of bars and restaurants along with museums and stores.

Other things in the area include the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art as well as the Ferry Building farmers market. If you’ve never been there yet, make time to check it out when you go to your next game. There are lots of different farmers that bring organic meats, cheeses and produce.

The next time you are in Seattle Washington, check out Safeco Field. The park is located in Pioneer Square, one of Seattle’s oldest neighborhoods. The Mariners have games next to the city’s best architecture and parks.

When you have the chance to catch the Mariners play a game, take time to explore the neighborhood. Walking in any direction around the stadium will give you a glimpse of the local culture and life of this great and cultured Seattle neighborhood.

Christmas Eve Differs In Countries Around the World.

November 24th, 2009 No comments

Christmas Eve, the night before Christmas, is a very special time of year. Every year, around the world, children are “wide-eyed” in anticipation of all the gifts they will receive tomorrow morning. Did you know that Christmas Eve traditions differ in various countries around the world? Well they do. In this article we will be exploring the traditions of Christmas Eve in various countries around the world.

Santa and his elves have been working all year for this big night. Spanning the globe via sleigh and reindeer can have you working up quite an appetite. Children to the rescue. In both Canada and the United States, children leave some milk and cookies to feed Santa’s ferocious appetite. In Australia and Britain they prefer to leave mince pies and sherry. The children of Sweden want to satisfy Santa’s love of chocolate, so they leave brownies.

Now that Santa has been fed, attention must be turned to the reindeer. After all, who can pull a sleigh full of Christmas presents around the world and not work up a big appetite? Children to the rescue one more time. Kids from Canada, Australia, Britain, and the United States leave a carrot to help give Santa’s reindeer a “bit of a push” as they span the globe. Children who follow the Dutch custom of sinterklass go a bit further. They will leave a carrot and some hay in a shoe. When they wake up the next morning it will be replaced by a gift.

Another tradition that has become popular in the United States is the reading of the book “A Visit from St. Nicholas” by Clement Clark Moore (or similar tale about Santa Claus). Other families watch a Christmas-related video or television show, like: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, A Charlie Brown Christmas or Frosty the Snowman. Singing Santa Claus songs such as Up on the Housetop, Here Comes Santa Claus, or Santa Claus is Coming to Town are also very popular.

On Christmas Eve, children all around the world will put their stockings on the mantel. They are full of anticipation that St. Nick will soon be here, and will fill their stocking with gifts, candy, and “other goodies”. Next they will look up the chimney to make sure that the “Big Guy” has not arrived yet. They will take a glance out the window to see if they can see a passing sleigh, and then perhaps unlock the front door (just in case Santa has problems getting down the chimney). With all the prep work done, it’s time to go off to bed…

Up til now it seems that children have been doing all the work, but not it’s time for mom and dad to join in on all the action. There are plenty of gifts that need to be placed under the Christmas tree. Many times these gifts will be signed “From Santa” or “Love Santa”.

We hope you liked this little tour of the traditions on the night before Christmas. In future articles we will be examining other aspects of the Christmas tradition. Hope you will join us…

What are the New Travel Laws regarding Passports for Canadians Traveling to the US?

November 5th, 2009 No comments

Since the tragic events of 911, there have been many changes to the laws when traveling from Canada to the United States. These changes are designed to enhance security between the two countries. When a Canadian travels to the US, they should be aware of the new travel laws regarding Passports.

The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) is one law that Canadians should learn about. It is a US law mandating that all travelers, including US and Canadian residents, provide a passport or other approved secure document when entering the United States. This law applies to all travelers, including children.

Canadians who travel by plane to and from the United States must provide one of the following documents: a passport or a NEXUS card to be presented at all U.S. airports when coming back to Canada. For example, if a Canadian travels to the US by vehicle, but returns to Canada by flights, a NEXUS card will be required before they can board the flight.

When Canadians enter the United States by land or water, they are mandated to provide ONE of the following documents: a passport; a NEXUS card, a Free and Secure Trade (FAST) card, an enhanced driver’s license (EDL) or enhanced identification card, or a Secure Certificate of Indian Status.

For Canadians under the age of 15, they must provide verification of their Canadian citizenship, such as an original or a photocopy of a birth certificate, or an original citizenship card. Canadian citizens 18 years of age or under who are traveling with an organized group may provide proof of Canadian citizenship only. This makes it easier to make school trips to the US.

There have been some concerns about meeting all of the requirements so the US has provided some flexibility on the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) law. However, the Canadian Government warns that the extent of this flexibility is the decision of the U.S. officials.

The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative was created after the implementation of the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 (IRTPA). This act mandated that every traveler have a passport or other approved document that proves one’s identity when coming into the United States. The purpose was to help the Department of Homeland Security identify a traveler quickly.

As of August 15, 2007, the Canadian Government has implemented measures to make renewing one’s passport easier. The Simplified Passport Renewal Program permits Canadians who meet specific eligibility criteria to renew their passport using a less complicated form and without submitting such documents as proof of citizenship, supplementary identification, and a guarantor declaration. Under the renewal program, one will just need to submit the small form along with two new photos, the application fee, and their last passport. As well, Passport Canada enacted a simpler guarantor policy, which allows most adult Canadian passport holders to act as guarantors for first time applicants.

In order to avoid any travel disruptions, before Canadians travel, they should be aware of the entry requirements for the United States.
