Manhattan: A Unique California Beach

December 10th, 2009 No comments

There’s a lot of great things about Southern California: the sun, the sand, the surfing. It’s in our cultural heritage, our cultural perception that if it has anything to do with sun, sand, and surf, then it must be California. Most people don’t immediately conjure images of Hawaii or Miami — nope, that instant image plugs right into the So-Cal scene. This usually means Los Angeles. Of course, this probably has less to do with any inherent qualities and more to do with the fact all the cameras happen to be in Los Angeles.

What we perceive is seldom what is true. This drives our cultural perceptions about a great many things. But, sticking with this idea of beach culture and “California vibes” brings us back to LA. Sure, the old movie moguls moved out here because of the perpetually sunny weather. Yes, it was a great idea, but it was also a massive evasion. The moguls moved west to avoid copyright infringement suits back East. So, even in its inception, the movie industry was trying to balance practicality and evasion.

And we can’t forget about a quality that is all too human: laziness. Just because you want to make a movie set in Miami or the Bahamas doesn’t necessarily mean you have the money to fly there and shoot there. Here is how the LA basin comes in handy for make-belief. You take the camera and crew down to Manhattan Beach and pretend it’s the Bahamas or Africa or wherever. I think this get to something inherent in Southern Californian culture: make belief.

It’ a triple P. Pretending, projecting, and preening are all qualities associated with movie culture, otherwise known as Hollywood. So, it follows that LA and a culture of self-aggrandizement should go hand-in-glove. And so, since all the cameras and broadcasters are located in LA, the rest of the country — and the world — have come to think that LA is some kind of center. For what, is still debatable.

If you want to understand the reality of Los Angeles and its outlying suburbs and affiliates cities is to come live here. Yes, that is a harrowing proposition, but if you want to understand a culture, you must be immersed in it. Plan your stay for about two or three years. Any more and you’ll never leave, any less and you’ll think you should have stayed longer. The area has that kind of appeal. It lulls you into thinking you may be discovered just around the corner — even if you’ve never thought about acting in your life. It’s called LA-LA Land for a reason.

If you’re in Los Angeles by accident or design, be sure you take the time to visit Manhattan Beach, CA. Book a room, stay awhile and soak up those crazy vibes.

Visit Carlsbad on Your Next Trip to San Diego

There’s something very special about the city of Carlsbad. It is a well rounded, amenity rich, coastal area that is home to great beaches, an International business presence, world class golf and resorts, and some of the best weather in this hemisphere. So what does the perfect day in Carlsbad look like? I’m going to walk you through a well rounded day in Carlsbad that will include sightseeing, exercise, sports and some good eats.

One of the first things you need to do is check out the beaches of Carlsbad. You’ll notice that they are typically less crowded than some of the more popular tourist beaches closer to San Diego. Parking should be relatively easy, and the real estate on the sand to park a beach towel is almost always available. If your looking to ride a bike or would prefer to walk on the tarmac, than take advantage of the walkway adjacent to the beach. It is slightly elevated so you can get a great perspective of the wonderful scenery.

If walking and site seeing has made you hungry, than there are wide variety of restaurants to check out in the Carlsbad area. Great Italian, Japanese, and Mexican food can be found throughout the main strip in Downtown Carlsbad along Carlsbad Village Drive. One of the more popular places is Pizza Port Carlsbad, that has been serving up great pizza and some of the best beer on the planet for over ten years. They recently one the best large brewpub and brewer award at the Great American Beer Fest.

There are plenty of fun activities for the entire family in Carlsbad, including the little ones. Carlsbad surprisingly is home to the amusement park Legoland. As the only location outside of Europe, it hosts a variety of rides, exhibits, demonstrations and even a re-creation of sites all over the world created with millions of Legos. In addition you to Legoland you can take the family to the Sea life Aquarium which takes an educational and entertaining approach to getting children excited about the wonders of the ocean.

Time to unwind? How about a stroll on the nature trail of the Batiquitos Lagoon? With multiple access locations in the Aviara area, it is easy to find parking and take a stroll, a jog or a run on this well maintained 2 mile nature trail. This is one of my favorite places to see the vibrant colors of the Carlsbad sunset and witness the birds, plants and wildlife that the city has to offer. A glimpse to the north will reveal the opulent grounds of the Aviara Four Seasons Resort and Spa, the Aviara Golf Club and some amazing ocean views.

As you can see Carlsbad has a little bit of everything to offer. It has the convenient location to easily get to the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, and it has the laid back feeling that you won’t get in a big city. Carlsbad is a great place to enjoy the SoCal liefestyle. So next time your in San Diego take a visit to Carlabd to see what the city by the sea is all about.

California Amongst Safest States

Based on information recently released from the FBI, crimes of violence and property crimes dropped across the state of California. Very few cities saw increases in crimes. Those that did, tended to be amongst the smaller cities in the state. In large California cities, the overwhelming majority witnessed substantial decreases.

Violent crimes, which are of a particular concern, dropped in Los Angeles. Even more assuring, the numbers from LA were very similar to the numbers of California as a whole. For every 100 crimes from the previous year, there were 4 less this year.

The city of San Diego was another city that saw less property incidents and violence. They had 5% less crimes involving violent crime from the previous year. That exceeds the national drop by almost 2%. With respect to crimes involving property (i.e. theft, grand theft auto, etc.) the city saw a 9% drop.

California can be proud that it has 6 out of 25 of the safest cities in the country and none of its cities are among the top 25 most dangerous. Additionally impressive, San Jose and San Diego are amongst the most safe cities with 500,000 residents or more. According to the FBI, the safest cities in California include Hillsboro and Moraga (Bay area communities), San Marino, Sierra Madre, Palos Verdes Estates, Soledad, Moorpark, Rancho Palos Verdes, Saratoga and Avenal.

With some places to choose from, California offers some of the best vacation spots in the world. With gorgeous weather and beaches, you can be sure your family will enjoy every second of their California trip. Plus, you can rest assured that you aren’t putting your family in a dangerous situation. There is nothing worse than being victimized by crime while on vacation.

The Little Old Lady: Pasadena’s Own

February 26th, 2009 No comments

Even if you’re not a big fan of the Beach Boys, I bet it’s hard for you to not sing along or tap your foot when they all hit the harmonies to “Little Old Lady From Pasadena.” Of course, it was a hit for Jan & Dean, those purveyors of all things surf related, first — but I digress. The song is couched in the history of Pasadena, California that few people know about.

It was the case that many refugees from the Dust Bowl of the Twenties, Thirties, and Forties made their way to settle in sunny Pasadena. During the Fifties and Sixties, when many of these transplants began dying, it became folklore that the husbands would die off before their wives, leaving the widows to drive around in their husbands’ cars.

It became something of a phenomenon in Southern California for car salesmen to pitch cars with something to the effect: “This car was owned by a little old lady in Pasadena, who only drove it to church on Sunday.” Hence, it was a barely-used car in excellent condition. Of course, the song turns that perception around, casting the “Little Old Lady” as a drag racer, firing her Super Stock Dodge up and down Colorado Boulevard.

Besides the little old lady and Jan & Dean, Pasadena has managed to hold its own against the renown and infamy of its southern neighbor, Los Angeles. In fact, it has carved itself out as a haven for artists and engineers alike. Between the students at Caltech and the California Arts Club, the city has a rich selection of cultural and artistic organizations.

And certainly, there is the Tournament of Roses Parade and the affiliated Rose Bowl. When it comes to the college game, the Rose Bowl is considered the “Granddaddy of Them All.” Although Los Angeles tends to take the lion’s share of notoriety and prestige, most people who know a thing or two about Southern California know the real class and history reside in the city that made the little old lady famous. The only way to know for yourself is to scour the Pasadena hotels, book a room, and get here as fast as your Super Stock Dodge can go.
