The Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas

February 27th, 2009 No comments

During my recent trip to Las Vegas I stayed at the Mirage Hotel. This hotel is owned by the MGM company. The property is decorated beautifully and is worth the money. My stay was perfect. I would say that if you are going to book this property, however, just pay for the standard, don’t go for the upgraded room unless you are getting suite. Check out the Secret Garden while you are there.

If you are choosing this property don’t pay the extra money for the room with the jetted tub on floors 24 and 25. The tub is nice, but the rooms are much smaller than the standard room. I would say you have about a 25-50 percent chance of a strip view, but I think they charge extra for that.

The Secret Garden is home to dolphins and white tigers. The admission is about twenty per person, but it is a really neat thing to see. You get to be face to face with these animals. The trainers are also very friendly and will share any information they can. Right now they also have tiger cubs and 2 baby dolphins which is really neat.

The decorations are very tropical. Palm trees, etc. They have a Beatle’s nightclub that is called Revolution, and there are many stores within the hotel. Their location is center strip which will give you access to all kinds of things to do. We saw the pirate show at the Treasure Island. There is also a volcano show at the Mirage but I ran out of time and didn’t see that.

I would recommend this hotel to anybody who wants to stay on the strip in a good location. Just remember that the standard room in my opinion is better than the upgraded room when it comes to space.

Through the Eyes of a Guest – The MGM Grand – Las Vegas – Part 1

January 22nd, 2009 No comments

As with all our articles on hotels, this one seeks to view the MGM Grand – Las Vegas Hotel through the eyes of a typical guest. This first article deals with arrival, check-in and accommodations. Part 2 will deal with entertainment and part 3 will give you a detailed analysis of the good, the bad and the ugly.

1. Checking In

Check in wasn’t very friendly or genuine. Additionally, the hotel wasn’t very crowded when I checked-in, but the wait was a little longer than it should have been.

2. Attitude of the Check-In Staff

Here is where I had my first issue. The woman that checked me in was friendly in a very robotic sort of way. She did her job, checked me in and offered nothing in terms of being helpful or going out of her way to explain anything. When I asked her about some of the activities and different things going on in the hotel, she offered no help whatsoever. This is a service business. I expect the staff to go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. Instead, I felt like a piece of cattle being herded into a pen. Overall, reviewing the entire staff through check-in, I have had refrigerators that have made me feel warmer.

3. The Room

The size of the room is fine. The bathroom is adequate, nothing special. The couch however is a joke. As I write this I am looking at a couch with a bottom cushion that clearly does not match. To add insult to injury, the bottom cushion is set in with it’s zipper side out and instead of two matching pillows, there is only one. Additionally, it looks like it has gotten more use than the couch in Howard Stern’s studio. There is no way I am going to sit on that. I am embarrassed for everyone on the staff because if they can’t get this right, I am scared to inspect the rest of the room. Finally, most hotels have upgraded their televisions, the one in my room is one of the old style Philips televisions, straight out of the 80′s.

At this point, there is nothing that makes me want to choose this hotel for a return visit, especially when there are several Las Vegas Hotels on the strip that will go the extra mile.

I look forward to letting you know what I think of the dining and entertainment in my next installment.

Getting the Cheapest Hotel Rates

January 14th, 2009 No comments

When traveling from one place to another you want to get the best that is offered in your destination. This always includes getting the best in hotels and lodging. As a person who is seeking a good trip and relaxation there are a few things to consider: price, how clean the property is, the accessibility and comfort.

Most people think that a nice luxury type property is not going to be in their price range. The fact is if you know where to find them, you can get a real deal on some of the nicest properties in any state.

An example is Las Vegas. If you look around at places to stay there you usually can save a lot of money. You can sometimes even pull off a five star property on the strip for half price ore better. If you can’t find that you can stay a block or two off the strip and still have a lot of fun. Vegas is just like a lot of places, the hotel will get you to the attractions because they want the business.

Disney World and Disney Land are perfect examples. The properties on the resort are pricy, but you can stay just a few miles away for about as cheap as you can stay in your own city. Most of these hotels that are off site still have shuttles to the park because that is what is drawing in their business, but they cut the price in half.

I would say the best way that I know of to save money is to book early and find a discount hotel website. These websites usually guarantee they have the lowest price, so if you find something out there that is cheaper, you can simply call the customer service line and they will match it. I say shop around very little, find a rate that you like, book it then keep shopping. If the rate drops let the service know.

Always read reviews of hotels and make sure the property is worth it. You don’t want to save a load of money and have health concerns when you arrive. If you shop then book then shop you will save money. If a price seems too good to be true, it probably is.
