How to organise the perfect honeymoon
Your honeymoon. Probably the most expensive holiday you will ever take. Probably the best two weeks of your life and the chance to relax after the stress of organising your wedding as Mr and Mrs. Everyone wants a dream honeymoon and everyone can have a dream honeymoon no matter what their budget. All it takes is some careful planning.
Here are my top ten tips on organising the perfect honeymoon.
What is your honeymoon style?
The first thing you should do is talk to your partner about the type of honeymoon you would both enjoy. Do you crave a week on an idyllic white sand beach or would you prefer an energy-packed sight-seeing trip? If you can’t reach an agreement, a twin-centre honeymoon is perfect for you!
Set a budget
Your honeymoon will most likely be the most expensive holiday you take so it’s worth setting a budget or costs can easily spiral out of control. Work out how much you can afford and set a realistic budget, but don’t be too hard on yourself, you want a honeymoon you’ll never forget and you may have the opportunity to do things you may never get the chance to do again.
Pick a destination
Once you’ve identified your honeymoon style and you know what you can afford, now you need to pick where you want to go. Pick a destination that is new to you and keep important things in mind such as weather during your month of travel, high and low seasons and hot spots for couples. Popular honeymoon destinations include the Indian Ocean and the Caribbean but keep an open mind and don’t limit yourself to these traditional spots. Some European destinations are just as beautiful and can cost a fraction of the price.
Decide on accommodation
Five star hotel or backpackers lodge? Safari camp or 3 star city centre hotel? Depending on your honeymoon style, you’ll need to think about what type of accommodation you want. Think about how much time you will be spending at the hotel. If you’ll be spending most of your time there then why not splash out on a luxury 5 star resort? If you know you’ll be doing sightseeing for most of the day, then a more modest hotel would suit you fine.
Start researching
Once you’ve decided as a couple what your perfect honeymoon involves, start researching and making hotel and flight enquiries as soon as possible. You’ll find endless websites offering honeymoons so make sure you check out a good variety and shop around for the best deal. There are some great offers online these days.
Book it!
Once you’ve found your perfect honeymoon at a price you can afford, don’t leave booking it until the last minute especially if you are getting married at a popular time of year (summer months, Christmas and New Year). Schedule your departure for a couple of days after the wedding instead of the day after. If you must travel the day after, try to choose an afternoon or evening flight. Once it’s booked, it’s out of the way and one less thing on your wedding to-do list!
Set up a honeymoon registry
These days, many couples swap the traditional wedding gift list for honeymoon registry. Perfect for couples who already live together and have toasters, blenders and bed sheets coming out of their ears, honeymoon registry invites your wedding guests to contribute towards the cost of your honeymoon. There are hundreds of websites that offer this service, so shop around and find the best one for you.
Check your passport and visas
Ladies, if you are taking your new husband’s name, make sure that all travel documents and bookings are made in the same name. Differences could end up with you being refused travel. If you are changing your passport before your honeymoon, make sure you leave plenty of time as sometimes delays can happen. You should also check if you need a visa to travel to your destination.
Pack in advance
You’ll want to look good on your honeymoon so plan your wardrobe and pack in advance. The last thing you’ll want to do after your wedding is pack a suitcase. Don’t forget to pack some sexy underwear and if you’re going on a beach holiday, a gorgeous bikini, sun hat and beach cover up. Maxi dresses make great beach to bar outfits. If you’re going on a city honeymoon, pack some good walking shoes, some comfortable outfits and a couple of evening dresses.
Relax and make the most of it!
Hopefully you’ll only be taking one honeymoon so make the most of it! Take some time out to really relax and spend some quality time with your new husband or wife. Take the opportunity to try new things and visit new places. Make sure you take lots of photos and put them in an album when you get home. You’ll be able to show your grand children how much fun you had, and just how good you used to look in a bikini!
