March 3rd, 2009 No comments

In these troubling times, it is essential that we step back and make a little time for rest and relaxation. It is especially important for couples to spend a little time rekindling the romance that first brought them together. A getaway at a romantic Southern bed and breakfast serves as a perfect little respite from the daily grind.

If you want to find the best inns of the South, head to ILoveInns.com. This award-winning website is run by American Historic Inns, publishers of more than 2.7 million travel guides. After an exhaustive search, the writers and staff at AHI have compiled their annual list of the Top Ten Most Romantic Inns of 2009. The following Southern bed and breakfasts are featured on this year’s list.

With its stunning ocean views and seaside location, guests might never want to leave the idyllic Port d’Hiver Bed and Breakfast. Located in historic Melbourne Beach, this Florida inn boasts gorgeous guest rooms, each of which has been decorated in a posh beach style. Dianne’s Room is a personal favorite, a cozy retreat with an almost whimsical canopy queen bed, unique vaulted ceiling with dark wood beams, and a clawfoot tub in the marble-appointed bath. Several rooms offer an ocean view, and some have a whirlpool tub. The beach is just 200 feet away, but the innkeepers also offer a spa pool for their guests to enjoy. The rates include a full breakfast, which you can enjoy either on your porch or in the dining room.

For a mix of new and old, consider the French Quarter Inn in Charleston, South Carolina. This Charleston inn features new construction but is surrounded by the downtown historic area just steps from the town’s famous market. The inn provides plenty of modern amenities, such as CD players and high-speed internet access. A unique Sound Sleep Pillow Menu allows guests to choose the perfect pillow to ensure an excellent sleep. All of the rooms and suites are spacious and some suites include extras such as whirlpool tubs, a private balcony and a fireplace. The inn’s restaurant, Tristan, has earned a four-star rating from AAA.

With its prime location and amazing history, The Inn at Warner Hall, is practically perfect in every way. This Virginia inn is located along the Chesapeake Bay in the village of Gloucester, 15 minutes from Yorktown battlefields and just a half-hour from Colonial Williamsburg. The historic plantation was created by George Washington’s great-great grandfather. Each of the elegant bedchambers has been decorated with period antiques, and the innkeepers pamper their guests with fluffy down comforters, soft bathrobes and luxurious bath products. Full, gourmet breakfasts are included in the rates, and snacks and beverages are available throughout the day. The inn’s restaurant is a delight, serving the best local produce and seafood on an ever-changing seasonal menu. Popular five-course tasting menus are presented on Friday and Saturday nights, offering such items as fennel and garlic crusted rack of lamb or perhaps butter-braised lobster with lemon.

More information about these three romantic inns, as well as more than 19,000 bed and breakfasts, boutique hotels and country inns is available at ILoveInns.com. This comprehensive website has all the information you need to help plan your next B&B getaway. You’ll find detailed information about each property as well as photographs and helpful travel maps. Enjoy Presidential History from a Virginia B&B

January 14th, 2009 No comments

As we get set to inaugurate a new leader, it’s also a good time to remember the leaders of the past. Take a Virginia vacation and you will find four historic presidential homes to tour, and after a day delving into the nation’s history you can come back and spend a restful night at a peaceful bed and breakfast.

Virginia has been home to more presidents than any other state in the union. Many of these presidential homes are open to the public and offer tours. Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson, is perhaps the highlight of any presidential home tour. Jefferson designed this amazing home himself, and a tour of Monticello might include a 30-minute walk through the house, as well as a tour of the gardens or plantation. James Monroe’s house, Ash Lawn-Highland, is just a few minutes from Monticello and also offers tours.

James Madison’s home, Montpelier, is less than a half-hour from the previous homes, and also is open for tours. Woodrow Wilson’s home is also in the same vicinity and offers yet another presidential adventure. Even George Washington’s home is just two hours away in Alexandria. So even if your time is limited, there is plenty to see and do.

Travelers can enjoy many of the presidential homes by staying at the historic Holladay House in Orange, Virginia. This Virginia inn is just minutes from James Madison’s home. The homes of Presidents Jefferson and Monroe are within 30 minutes of the inn. Another close presidential home is that of Woodrow Wilson. Even George Washington’s gracious manor, Mount Vernon, is only two hours away. In addition to the presidential venues, there are dozens of popular wineries nearby. Fine restaurants and shops are within walking distance of the inn.

The guest rooms at the Holladay House are decorated with antiques, and the queen and king beds are topped with the finest linens. Some rooms include a fireplace or double whirlpool tub, and all bathrooms are stocked with specialty hypoallergenic bath products. The innkeepers pamper guests with a full breakfast and offer coffee, tea and home baked goodies throughout the day.

To celebrate the inauguration of Barack Obama to our nation’s most prestigious office, the innkeepers at Holladay House are offering a special inauguration discount. If you stay at the inn for three nights during the inauguration (January 20), you will receive your third night’s stay at half price. At a time when saving money is especially important, this deal will help make your presidential getaway a little easier on the pocketbook.

If you can’t make it for the inauguration, the innkeepers also offer two presidential packages. The “Bill of Rights” package includes a two-night stay at the inn, full breakfast each morning, tickets to Monticello, Montpelier and Ash Lawn-Highland, as well as passes to the historic Michie Tavern. The innkeepers will send you off on your day trip with a picnic basket stocked with cheese, crackers, fresh fruit, dessert and sparkling water. If you upgrade “Constitution Package,” you receive all of these amenities, as well as a two-night’s stay in one of the inn’s suites, which have a whirlpool tub, king bed, fireplace and private porch.
