Enjoy an Amazing Beach Honeymoon in Fiji

Article by Meghan Burton

Fiji is already renowned for its sparkling waters; if you’ve ever purchased Fiji water and drooled over the image on the bottle, then perhaps a Fijian beach honeymoon would suit you. After all, what’s better on your honeymoon than a gorgeous expanse of vivid blue water, an endless sunny sky, and soft white powdery sand under your feet? My answer is not much.

When you arrive in Fiji, you’ll be greeted with flower leis, smiles, and a warm welcome from everyone you’ll meet on your way from the airport to your hotel. You may have to take a ferry from your arrival to your island destination; if that’s the case, relax and enjoy the fact that you’ve arrived. You’ll get a beautiful view over the water and may truly begin to realise that yes, you are on your honeymoon, and this amazing paradise is yours for the entire week.

Your choice of accommodation is extensive. I’d recommend a luxury beach villa as the perfect place to spend your honeymoon. Many of these villas are private, well-designed, and completely intimate, the perfect place to begin your marriage. Just one of your options includes the Likuliku Lagoon, a relatively new resort in Fiji’s Mamanuca islands. Likuliku boasts the country’s first Overwater Bures, truly luxury accommodation perched almost magically above perfect Turquoise blue waters. Each bure has been carefully designed with rich fabrics, tasteful local artwork, and well placed glass panels on the floor to remind you what’s beneath your feet whenever you look down. They also have steps leading straight down into the ocean – a morning swim is just a few feet away.

If you can’t afford an overwater bure, don’t despair; you’ll also be able to book a regular bure, which is still charmingly nestled along the beachfront and throughout the gardens. Some of these even have their own plunge pools, with gorgeous views of the perfect lagoon, outdoor showers, and private decks with their own daybeds. The resort also boasts a spa, horizon-edge swimming pool, and gourmet meals included in the price.

Fiji is also the perfect place for active folks. There are many
enthralling activities available. You could go sailing in a catamarans or a kayak, head out for some windsurfing, or go underwater for some snorkelling. Scuba diving is also available in many places, and you’ll find training dives available for those who don’t have any experience with the sport.

It’s well worth taking a bit of time out to spend a day or two in the villages. Many Fijian people are warm and welcoming, eager to share the history of their island with you and show you around, especially if you visit one of the villages recommended by your resort. You’ll also find a large variety of nature trails around various Fijian islands, taking you past waterfalls, up volcanoes, and through lush, gorgeous forests.

If you’re looking for a beach honeymoon, you could hardly go wrong with Fiji. It’s one of the world’s most gorgeous places, and what’s better than an interlude of pure relaxation and sunshine to start your successful marriage?

Rottnest Island Western Australia

August 26th, 2009 No comments
by Jimmy Schmidt

Sitting on the edge of the Australian continental shelf near Perth in western Australia, Rottnest Island is just 11 km (6 mi) long and 4.5 km (2.7 mi) at its widest point. An iconic holiday destination for Perth residents, with 70 per cent of visitors coming for a day out, the entire island is run as a nature reserve and the surrounding waters as a marine park.

Known to local Aboriginal people as Wadjemup, the island is believed to be a place of spirits and is of significance to the Aboriginal communities. Artefacts have been found at a number of sites on Rottnest Island which are at least 6,500 years old, and possibly older, so there were indigenous people living here before sea levels rose and the island was separated from the mainland.

The first Europeans to discover the island were Dutch navigators who were searching for a shorter route from the Cape of Good Hope to Batavia in the 17th century. At that time the island was uninhabited. Samuel Volkerson was the first European to actually land on the island in 1658. William de Vlamingh visited in 1696 and named the island Rottnest after the abundance of Quokkas (small marsupials) he saw, mistaking them for rats.

Other Europeans soon followed, believing the island had potential for salt harvesting, farming and fishing. From 1839 for almost a century the island housed a penal colony for Aboriginal men and boys. When the colony closed, the leisure potential of the island was realized and tourism took off.

The island is best explored by bicycle as private cars are not allowed. The 24-km (15-mi) route around the coast runs through some of the most beautiful scenery, passing small, sandy beaches in secluded coves. The island has a total of 63 beaches and 20 bays, some of the finest in the world, and the turquoise water makes swimming here a must.

There are lovely reefs here, with twenty species of colourful corals and 364 species of fish, which can be explored by snorkelling, diving or a trip in a glass-bottomed boat. There are also a number of shipwrecks close to the shore, making diving here a popular pastime. Look out for humpback whales, green and loggerhead turtles, rays and bottlenose dolphins.

South Pacific Dive Sites

One of the best places in the world to scuba dive is in the South Pacific. Some of the best tropical islands in the world are here and off these islands you will find a rich diversity of reef systems. From cheap Thailand to expensive French Polynesia, in the south pacific a diver could see all the major types of fish and coral systems in a vast array of color and diversity.

Diving in the south pacific is also a good way to learn about the area. The reef systems here are very well preserved and by coming here you can learn about how they work and they dangers they face elsewhere in the world. Diving in the south pacific is more than just fun- it’s also educational. In many parts of the world, reef systems are dying but here they are still vibrant.

There are many great facilities on Fiji for diving. You can use these boats to explore all the beautiful scuba diving points in this area. You also have the option of contacting the scuba diving instructors in case you need a bit of expertise on your trip. Fiji is especially wonderful for fish enthusiasts as there are over 1200 species of fish besides dolphins and whales. The sea temperature out here is pretty warm. You should ideally go for a dive out here in the early morning before the wind picks up.

A good off the beaten path islands is the island of Samoa. Samoa scuba diving holidays are very limited and dive sites and professional scuba diving operators are rather limited when compared to other islands in the region. There are some very good reefs for scuba diving but these sites are limited to the south coast. The main attractions here are pinnacles and marine life such as dolphins and turtles. You won’t find amazing diving here but if you want to avoid the crowds, this is a great place to do it!

You can also try Tahiti, but remember its again quite expensive when you compare it to the other options available in the South Pacific. It has a fine display of sharks and rays and a fine collection of colorful reef fish too. Head off to Bora Bora and Moorea if you want to scuba dive. Tahiti is a must for coral reef lovers. The visibility out here is very good and the sea temperature too is ideal for scuba divers. Tonga is another good option for scuba diving. You will be able to spot whales around this area.

There are many great dive spots all over the world. Yet for its size and complexity, the region of the South Pacific must always be the top area to go diving. Here you will find a wide variety of fish, coral, and sea life that just can’t be found anywhere else. It’s size also ensures that you won’t have to dive with lots of people and you can have wide areas to just yourself.

March 6th, 2009 No comments

For a long time now you have wanted to discover the beauty and the mystery of the deep. Maybe that is the main reason why you signed up into scuba diving, joined a club and earned money relentlessly just so you can have enough to spend for diving trips. And if you are into underwater photography, maybe you want to capture such magnificent views, like the ones that you have seen in photographs from books and nature shows shown on television.

Well, to help you get what you are looking for, it is best to start by choosing first a scuba diving destination”a place thats guaranteed to give you front row seats to natures grand display of marine art. One of the top destinations travel agencies and other divers can recommend”wherever they are in the world”is the Fiji Islands.

Found somewhere between the Australian continent and the Tahiti Islands, the Fiji Islands is considered to be a haven for sightseeing and nature loving fanatics. The islands are scattered throughout the South Pacific Ocean, and is also known to be a place of friendship, due to the warm hospitality offered by its locals.

Though Fiji islands is made up of 322 islands, roughly a hundred of them are inhabited. The islands developed out of the vast coral reefs that inhabit this part of the world. Because of that, scuba diving enthusiasts refers to the islands as the Soft Coral Capital of the World.

It is a known fact that fishes and other marine animals flock to the coral reefs for shelter and food. And since the islands is literally an island made out of coral reefs, scuba divers and snorkelers alike can expect a wide variety of marine life”each with its own set of colors and other wonderful eye candies.

The turquoise-colored waters are also known for its clear vision it provides. The islands being situated near the equator helps bring about the possibility of seeing what is found beneath the waters even from just the surface. And if you are the type that loves warmth and sunshine, then the Fiji Islands will have to top your list of vacation destinations.

If you love photography, then the high visibility which allows you to see what is found beneath for many meters can be captured by your own camera even without diving underwater, thus you dont have to secure your own underwater camera. But the best way to capture such wonderful sights indeed is to suit up for scuba diving, bring along your underwater camera and shoot away. Going under the surface helps you to be near the various species that lurks within the reefs, like the colorful clown and butterfly fish, sharks, and sea anemones. Being near them not only gives you the best shots, but also allows you to study them in their natural habitat up close.

Even though the sights you get to see in this place sounds expensive, the Fiji Islands is also known for its reasonable prices. In fact, many agree that Fiji is the best place to learn scuba diving because most of the dive shops there offer certification courses at relatively cheaper prices. Now thats great deal for a scuba diving destination!
