Egyptian Adventures with El Quseir Holidays
Article by Claire Collins
El Quseir holidays give you the opportunity to visit the sites of Ancient Egypt whilst staying in lovely unspoilt resort. Midway between Hurghada and Marsa Alam, it is an ideal base to visit Aswan, Cairo and Luxor. El Quseir has it all – warm, clear water, beautiful sandy beaches, unspoilt bays, mangrove swamps, harbours, a diving centre and lots of ancient buildings. Many of these are being restored under the UNESCO Heritage Plan. Along the narrow streets are many colourful bazaars where you can haggle over items whilst drinking sweet mint tea.
Aswan, the site of the famous Aswan dam, is a quiet resort, lying eighty miles south of Luxor. It is easily within reach of El Quseir and there are excursions for tourists to view the dam and the other historic buildings in Aswan. The majesty and grandeur of the dam takes your breath away. It is very necessary as Aswan is one of the driest places in the world. So much so, that the houses in the Nubian settlements are built without any roofs. Whilst in Aswan, visit the Philae Temple, which was dismantled and rebuilt on Agilika Island to make way for the construction of the dam. At night it stages a light and sound show which is spectacular. Another tourist attraction worth seeing is the Unfinished Obelisk which is the largest ancient obelisk in the world. It has been calculated that had it been finished, it would have weighed an impressive 1,200 tons.
Cairo is well worth a visit when staying on El Quseir holidays. As can be expected there are numerous excursions to visit this vibrant, bustling city. Everyone flocks to see the last remaining original Seven Wonders of the World, the Pyramids at Giza and The Sphinx, which still bears the bullet holes when Napoleon’s men fired at it. The Egyptian Museum holds many wonders, including many artefacts from the Tutankhamen tomb as well as 250, 0000 other artifacts from the Land of The Pharaohs. No excursion to Cairo is complete without a trip to the colourful bazaar at Khan El Khalili, where you might be able to pick up a souvenir at a bargain price.
More people visit The Valley of The Kings when on Luxor holidays than any other Egyptian attraction and it’s easy to see why. Here you will see the tombs of the great Pharaohs, Ramses the Great and the boy king Tutankhamen, whose tomb was only unearthed in 1922 by Howard Carter after it had lain undiscovered for over 3000 years. Whilst in Luxor, you must visit the immense Colossi of Memnon and the impressive Temple of Queen Hatshepsut. The Temple of Karnak is the world’s largest religious site with a collection of ruined temples and intricately carved pillars. At night, it stages a spectacularly breath-taking light and sound show.
