March 10th, 2009 No comments

Colorado is a beautiful state located in the Rocky Mountains of the United States. It is a beautiful state with many natural tourist attractions from the skiing, rock climbing, and various water sports available to anyone with a passion for the outdoors year round. However, there is a relatively new passion in Colorado and it is an attraction for anyone who loves sports. Colorado has proved itself to be a very successful place for both tourism and sports and a very successful location for most any professional sports team. The National Football League, National Basketball Association, Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer, the National Hockey League and even a professional Lacrosse team from the National Lacrosse League all have successful programs with the Colorado fan base. It creates a fun environment for people all across the United States and the world who visit Colorado and experience the fun atmospheres offered at the various events.

The National Football League has its representative in the Denver Broncos professional football team. They have been a very successful NFL team and have been around the league since 1960. Season tickets sell out in Denver, despite the teams record. Win or lose, the Denver Bronco fans show up in force. During the off-season tours of both Invesco Field where the Broncos play, and the locker rooms are available.

The Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche are both successful attractions to the Pepsi Center in Denver. The Nuggets of the NBA and Avalanche of the NHL each draw crowds of enthusiastic fans from all over the United States.

The Colorado Rockies were brought to the Major Leagues in 1993 and have been an incredibly popular much loved and supported team. The team plays in Coors Field where there are many fun things for a visiting baseball fan to do before, during and after the games. There are tours of the locker rooms and stadium available when the team isn’t playing at home and during the off-season.

Colorado Rapids soccer is one of the most popular teams in Major League Soccer, and was one of the ten original franchises in the league. The Rapids play at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, a beautiful state of the art facility. Guided tours and field trips for teams are available through the park. A ticket is required to enter, but admission is free.

In 2003 Colorado also joined the National Lacrosse League, bringing in the Colorado Mammoth, a team once known as the Baltimore Thunder, the Pittsburgh CeaseFire and Washington Power. Now at home in Colorado, the successful Colorado Mammoth lead the league in attendance in 2004 and 2006, continuing Colorado’s good reputation as a great place to bring a sports team.

The Old West in Colorado

Ever wanted to go back to the Ol’ West and experience what it was like during the time of gun duels, cowboy hats and ‘purdy’ salons? Then come to the ol’ frontier town of Buckskin Joe! Where guns and hats rule the arid area, and where the past meets the present, all in one place!

The whole area is themed during the time of the Wild West. You have railways, gun fights, gift shops (okay, so this one ain’t that Wild yet) and a town of terror. The town of terror is probably the most famous of the attractions, bringing in at least most of the visitors into the area.

The railway dubbed the ‘Royal Gorge Scenic Railway’ was created in 1957 by the local Canon City Entrepreneur, for use in the gorge. 50 years thereafter, it still is the most used and most affordable way to travel around the area. The trains run over wooden trestles, with power able to carry at least six cars behind it.

The frontier town itself is one big attraction in itself. Everyday, at least a few ‘gunfights’ occur, which adds to the authenticity. The buildings aren’t to be shy about either, they have that realism that screams ‘Wild!’ It’s all spirit!

The town boasts it’s specialty when it comes to food. Buffalo burgers! Honestly, one could never say they’ve been here unless they have had a taste of the town’s other ‘red meat’. They really don’t have a big size for the burger’s meat, but the taste is filling and the meat isn’t half-bad. The buffalo may not appeal for most people, so they also have meatless buffalo burgers for the vegans and those who just want a light feeling of what the essence of buffalo is all about.

Pasadena By Way of Santa Fe

February 15th, 2009 No comments

Who doesn’t remember Johnny Mercer’s beloved song: The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe? You know, the one made famous by Judy Garland in the movie The Harvey Girls? Come on, you hipsters — isn’t it cool to dig that big band sound and old movies? Well, trust me, Mr. Mercers ode to the old railroad line was a hit in its day — it even won an Oscar for Best Original Song.

One of the largest railroad lines, the Santa Fe was the brainchild of the indomitable Cyrus K. Holliday. Commissioned in 1859 by Congress to connect Topeka, Kansas to Santa Fe, New Mexico. Though named for the New Mexican capital, the Santa Fe would never be able to directly serve the city, as the terrain was too difficult to blast through. Ah, the irony. Regardless, the Santa Fe’s tracks managed to reach Pueblo, Colorado in 1876. To compensate for the fact it took fifteen years to reach Colorado from Kansas, the railroad parceled the land granted to it and sold the parcels as homesteads. Not a bad idea: build towns that you will later serve. Note to self…

Without the wherewithal to fully capitalize on its innovative idea, the Santa Fe was a pioneer of interconnected freight services. The railroad owned a tugboat fleet and an airline (Santa Fe Skyway). This model allowed, in theory, Santa Fe to collect the revenues for all faces of freight delivery. When the railroad embraced passenger lines, they expanded their services with a bus line that delivered passengers to any number of locations.

Mind you, this isn’t the story of the Santa Fe, per se; its a story of how this massive railroad company infused a then-small town in California with a new vitality, one that is self-evident today. In the 1880s, no one seems to be sure exactly, the Santa Fe reached sleepy Pasadena. From that point on, the City of Roses became a resort destination for Midwesterner and Easterner visitors eager to escape the brutal winter.

Built within a stone’s throw of the Santa Fe station, the Hotel Green, in particular, would begin a boom in Pasadena motels and hotels that did not stop. As the tourists streamed in, Pasadena’s reputation as the Athens of the West was born. Now with a Beach Boys song and the spirit of Gene Autry and Roy Rogers infusing it, Pasadena remains something of a throwback to the glory years of California’s early statehood and the twilight of the once wild West.
