Kihnu Island in the Baltic

September 10th, 2009 No comments

Kihnu lies 12 km (7 mi) off the coast of Estonia and is the largest of more than a dozen islands in the reefs and shallows of the Gulf of Riga. It is 16 sq km (6 sq mi) in area with a low ridge running down the middle and only 9 m (30 ft) above sea level at its highest point.

The island farmsteads are enclosed by forest, which prevents soil erosion as well as protecting the islanders from the bitter northeast winds.

Huge broadleaf trees stand like sentinels in the coastal meadowlands that lead to a 36 km (22 mi) long shoreline of dunes and shifting sands where the scent of juniper is everywhere in the air. The island is a nesting place for hundreds of bird species and the coastal reef is home to the last grey seal colony in the Baltic.

The first historical documents relating to Kihnu date from the late 14th century but excavations show that the island was inhabited, at least during the summer months, from around 1500 BC.

It has at various times been under Danish, Swedish, Estonian, Polish and Russian rule, reflecting the turbulent history of the Baltic.

Since time immemorial the men here have been seafarers and fishermen, skilled at woodwork and shipbuilding, while the women are wholly responsible for working the land and keeping alive the rich island culture of music, dance and poetry.

A trip to Kihnu transports you back in time into a fascinating folk culture. The inhabitants speak their own language and wear traditional homespun costume. Each woman makes her family’s clothes with intricately knitted, woven and embroidered patterns symbolising ancient legends.

The islanders are symbiotically bound up with their harsh environment, their survival entirely dependent upon cultural loyalty and community sharing. Against all odds, they have managed to hang onto their heritage at the same time as welcoming strangers to their shores.

UK mainly consists of famous nations like England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland. All these kingdoms are pretty ancient and possess a very old background. In United Kingdom you have a number of accommodation options in terms of holiday cottages. There are a huge number of ancient holiday cottages in UK. These cottages are very much praised by the tourists because of the rich heritage they carry. These cottages are very old, but are very strongly built as they have sustained all kinds of climatic circumstances in these years.

I am going to list below, few of the best holiday cottages in UK that were build in around 16th Century:

1. Church Farm Cottage Church Farm is one of the best cottages located in a quiet street at St Briavels, balanced high on a limestone flat terrain and it seems like as if they are overlooking the River Wye which forms the heart of the very old Forest of Dean. Capably and compassionately reformed to a very high customary from a Grade II listed, 16th century hangar, Church Farm Cottage is positioned adjacent to the major farmhouse and forms one side of the yard of this beautiful and traditional smallholding.

There are walks in the whole region and tourists have straightforward contact across the owners’ land through forest onto confined bridle paths. The local region of this province also presents quite a large assortment of things. I must tell you that you will surely love this cottage and never feel like leaving this place after reading about its world class features and interesting background.

2. 16th century cottage in Perch National park This holiday accommodation is newly renovated with 33 acres of property. You will also an easy access to the Lounge with log burning stove and fully outfitted kitchen, shower room as well as bathroom with full central heating. It is considered as the perfect location for activities like cycling and walking. However this is quite a rustic locality and you will certainly find pin drop silence in this locality.

3. Wood cutters cottage Trust me that this is yet another cottage which is quite ancient and in fact it was built in the late 16th century. Due to the rich heritage this cottage carries you would love to stay here.

These are some of the best prehistoric holiday cottages in UK, which were built in 16th Century. Make sure you consider them as an accommodation option for you.

The Wonders of Ancient Egypt

May 8th, 2009 No comments

The recent contest to create a list of the New Seven Wonders of the World gave special recognition to the Great Pyramids, who were one of the original seven wonders listed by ancient historian Herodotus. If you visit Egypt today, there are many wonders for you to explore.

Kom Ombo Temple: The Temple of Kom Ombo is an unusual double temple built during the Ptolemaic dynasty in the Egyptian town of Kom Ombo. The building is unique because its ‘double’ design meant that there were courts, halls, sanctuaries and rooms duplicated for two sets of gods. The southern half of the temple was dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek, god of fertility and creator of the world with Hathor and Khonsu. The northern part of the temple was dedicated to the falcon god Haroeris. The temple is atypical because everything is perfectly symmetrical along the main axis.

Edfu Temple: The Temple of Edfu is an ancient Egyptian temple located on the west bank of the Nile in the city of Edfu which was known in Greco-Roman times as Apollonopolis Magna, after the chief god Horus-Apollo. It is the second largest temple in Egypt after Karnak and one of the best preserved. The temple, dedicated to the falcon god Horus, was built in the Greek period between 237 and 57 BC. The inscriptions on its walls provide important information on language, myth and religion during the Greco-Roman period in Egypt.

The Mosque of Muhammad Ali: The Alabaster Mosque is situated in the Citadel of Cairo and commissioned by Muhammad Ali Pasha between 1830 and 1848. Situated on the summit of the citadel the mosque, the largest to be built in the first half of the 19th century and is most visible mosque in Cairo. The mosque, along with the citadel, are the landmarks and big tourist attractions in Cairo. Its beauty rivals those of European cathedrals.

Temple of Karnak: Karnak a vast complex of ruined temples, pillars and other buildings. It is located near Luxor in Egypt. It was the most holy place in Ancient Egypt, the main place of worship of the Theban Triad with Amun as its head. It is the largest temple or temple complex in all of Egypt.

The Sphinx: Beneath the shadow of the Great Pyramid lies the mysterious Sphinx. Buried by sand over the years, the Sphinx was re-discovered by European in the 19th Century. It is the largest monumental sculpture of antiquity in the world today. It can be visited as part of any trip to the Pyramids when in Cairo.
