Do Something Different On Your Lake Buena Vista Vacation

March 27th, 2009 No comments

So you’ve decided to come back for another Lake Buena Vista vacation and although perhaps you will spend a couple of days going to the Disney or Universal theme parks you would like some alternative places to visit. Perhaps you would like a different sort of theme park for say half a day so you can spend the rest of the day chilling out by the pool. Well here are a few ideas.

Gatorland is the place to see some of Florida’s oldest inhabitants – alligators. Dating back to prehistoric times, these fascinating creatures live wild all over the State and at Gatorland’s Jumparoo you will get the closest of close ups that anyone could want, plus lots of facts to educate you and an introduction to other animals..

For more excitement you can watch in awe as the trainers wrestle with these huge animals. Remember to take a change of clothes for when you want to cool off in the splash park. You will find Gatorland at 14501 South Orange Blossom Trail, Orlando, Florida 32837 about 1 mile north of Osceola Parkway.

Slightly farther away but also worth adding to your list of highlights is Jungle Adventures. This is a nature park and a zoo and will allow you to get very close to baby alligators, snakes and other wildlife. There are about 200 alligators altogether and some of them like to wrestle! Jungle Adventures is on Highway 50 to the east of Orlando.

The park takes longer to get to than Gatorland but it does have a wider range of animals including raccoons and even a Florida Panther (an endangered species in Florida). Another attraction is the tour of a replica Native American village that includes examples of tools produced by today’s Native Americans.

If you prefer a more gentle and relaxing experience then a visit to Historic Bok Sanctuary in Lake Wales would certainly fit the bill. You can wander through the magnificent gardens with their meandering paths enjoying the perfume of the flowers and looking out for the many different birds and butterflies that are attracted to the Sanctuary.

All around the gardens are benches and grassy areas for you to relax and experience the tranquility. You can take a picnic and settle down on the grass and enjoy reading a book while enjoying the peace or sample a more substantial repast in Carillon Cafe.

Every hour from the superb marble and coquina bell tower you can hear beautiful carillon music. There is also an opportunity to step back in time with a tour of the Pinewood Estate which was built as a winter retreat for Charles Austin Buck and still contains most of the original furnishings and decorations.

Another peaceful place to visit is Lake Louisa State Park which is located at 7305 US Hwy 27 Clermont, Florida 34714. There are many activities to enjoy especially if you are the outdoor type. Take your binoculars with you and wander down the nature trails to see birds, butterflies, deer, opossum, wild turkeys and many other mammals. Don’t forget to wear suitable shoes if you are going hiking, sunscreen so you don’t get burnt and maybe some insect repellent.

Lake Louisa is loved by anglers because they can use four of the six lakes as long as they have a license. The Lake does offer the opportunity to swim, which can be very welcome after a hot few minutes or hours on the hiking trails, but pay attention to the restrictions highlighting the water areas to avoid. Also, be sure to take your own food and drink as none is available to buy inside the park.

So there you are – these are just a few of the many alternatives to Disney and Universal that can make your Lake Buena Vista vacation just that little bit more special.

Learn the Rules About Carry On Luggage For Easier Travel

March 19th, 2009 No comments

In this day and age there are all sorts of regulations making airline travel seem more complicated than ever before. With restrictions on size, new security measures in place and rules on what you can and cannot take in your hand luggage, it’s all a bit of a pain. Nonetheless, these rules and regulations have been created as a means of protection for all travelers.

This is not always easy and things seem to change from week to week which causes more and more confusion for the traveler. However, turning up at the airport and pleading ignorance is absolutely no excuse and you will no longer get away with it. By far the best way to avoid any bother at the airport as far as your luggage is concerned is to make sure you know and understand the rules before setting off on your journey.

The website of the airline you are traveling with is a great way to find out all of the up to date rules about hand or carry on luggage and even though airports in America all have the same body of rules, some are interpreted in a different way to others.

International rules for your cabin luggage can be even more difficult to sort out. Security is generally much more stringent overseas and you will be subject to the regulations in place at your port of arrival. And when you come back home from a foreign country, you will once again need to be aware of the procedures in place at your airport of departure.

Some carry on luggage rules are more like a request than a rule. For example, airlines request that you bring the smallest piece of carry on luggage that is necessary, but you are allowed to have a carry on piece up to the largest allowable size.

In the same way, the Transportation Security Administration advises that you should stow away any electronic gear in your checked baggage, although it is permissible to carry them in your hand luggage.

No doubt you’ve witnessed a passenger at airport security who loudly refuses to obey the rules on carry on luggage. It’s an awkward situation and one that delays all the other passengers as well. And they can’t win – the staff is following the rules and you can’t change their minds by making a fuss. Don’t be that person; know the carry on luggage rules before you leave home.

Your journey will be easier, quicker and safer all round if you take a few simple steps to keep abreast of carry on luggage rules and regulations.

Places To Visit in Oahu

March 18th, 2009 No comments

Many millions of visitors each year land at Honolulu International Airport expecting a holiday of a lifetime on these islands. Immediately after landing, visitors hop in to buses or taxis sent by the hotel and zoom past downtown Honolulu to reach their pre-reserved accommodation at a Waikiki hotel. The attraction of Waikiki is nearly magnetic – the bustle of the busy streets, the long and extended beaches and the rich history of the land soon make the visitors hit the streets. Waikiki is known for its excitement, so much so in fact that many people never leave this area to explore other beautiful parts of the island. With six million visitors annually, you would expect them to want to see the island but most remain within Waikiki’s two square miles.

If you are a visitor who would like to get a taste of Oahu through the eyes of a resident, this article may be of special interest to you.

Magic Island Beach Park – This popular park is located just west of Waikiki, across the street from the Ala Moana Shopping Center. What are the points of attraction in this park? It has two beaches, a jogging path stretching up to 3 miles, tennis courts and much more. A walk around the park will expose the center of Hawaiian culture – people with large extended families gather around hibachis, spending the day together with a good food and plenty of sun. This is a great place for a barbecue and considering the beaches are never overcrowded, it makes for a fantastic sun-filled day.

The Contemporary Museum – This beautiful museum is not very large by museum standards and is situated high up on a ridge that offers spectacular vistas – it can be found on Makiki Heights drive. The exquisite exhibits in this somewhat small museum keep changing in the 5 galleries and when you have finished viewing these, you could go outdoors for a walk in to the sculpture gardens. 5 acres, includes sculptures as well as places for meditation, and can offer an unforgettable view of Honolulu.

Leong’s Cafe – A lu’au is a must-do on any trip here and along with the fantastic entertainment they can also offer great native Hawaiian food. But if you are true connoisseur of authentic Hawaiian food, then the place you ought to visit is Leong’s Cafe located at 2343 North King Street. Here they have been serving the Hawaiian population for in excess of five decades with traditional dishes enjoyed by many.

Champion Malasadas – there is a local treat that originated in portugal called Malasadas which has become so popular that they even renamed Fat Tuesday to Malasadas day. The location details, where this venerated and most popular bakery is Champion Malasadas, 1926 South Beretania Street. Anyone that enjoys donuts will like these (even though they do not have a hole) and they come with a variety of fillings or if you prefer, you can eat them without any type of filling.

Honolulu Chinatown ” Walk through the lanes of Chinatown and you start thinking where am I, and what era am I in? Everything from dim sum to fresh produce can be found here but it also has more modern treats to like the new Hip Lounge. The shops and streets are unforgettable, offering goods, which you would never find in an average American store. While you could always take a guided walking tour of the place the wisest thing to do is to go for a walk by yourself, walking leisurely and only stopping to see something, which tickles your areas of interest.

If you are interested in seeing Oahu through a locals eyes, be sure to spend some time outside of Waikiki. Stop by some or all of the spots listed above and see some of what truly makes Hawaii special.

Family Fun in New York’s Catskill Mountains

February 28th, 2009 No comments

[I:http://phila-airport-parking.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/LJJames2.jpg] Right now for most Americans money is getting a bit tight. We all still want to have those great family trips that we take every year, but we have to watch how much we spend. Well I just had a great time with my family in New York’s Catskill Mountains that didn’t put us all in the poor house.

I was in the Catskill area with Family for the Christmas Holidays. My younger Sister has three kids. Which makes me an Uncle and I always enjoy spending time with my two Nieces and Nephew, The Youngest is 6 years old and the oldest is 13 years old. Now when the age gap is that far apart it can make finding something they all want to do very difficult. Well We where also looking for something to do that not only the kids but us adults could enjoy as well.

It took some time but my younger Brother came up with the idea of Snow Tubing. It sounded good to me. The Kids loved the idea and so did my Sister, Her Husband and even my Mother. OK so then came the part where the money comes in. I called up Windham Mountain to get their Snow tubing times and rates (http://www.windhammountain.com/mountain/tubing) . When they told me their snow tubing rates I was surprised as they where not too bad $20 a person for two hours $25 for four hours and they had a Friday night special of only $15 dollars from 4pm to 9pm ! Only $15 for Five hours, I was sold as it just happened to be Friday.

So the group of Nine of us piled into two vehicles and we where off to do some tubing on Windham’s 650 foot snow covered snow tubing slope. We where Lucky as the weather was warm for December in the Catskill Mountains. The Slope was perfect, there where about ten lanes to slide down and the Snow Tubing staff kept the line moving. [I:http://phila-airport-parking.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/LJJames9.jpg]

Let me see if I can explain how everything went. When we got up to the Slope we grabbed a large canvased covered Snow Tube then picked a lane. We could go down the lane in groups or by ourselves. I have to say my first trip down caught me by Surprise. It has been a few years since I have been sleigh riding but I know I never went that fast down the old hill. Now hearing me say how fast the slope is, may make you think you or your kids might be scared. Don’t worry about that, I saw kids as young as three years old tubing down the Slope and they were loving it!

At the bottom of the hill there are mats placed at the end of every lane to slow you down safely, Along with attendants ready to help you if you needed it( I didn’t see anyone who needed any help). Now anyone who has gone Sleigh riding as a kid remembers the trip down the hill was always the fun part, It’s the walk back up that is work. Well not at Windham’s snow tube park. The canvases that cover the snow tubes have long straps that hook up to a conveyor so all you have to do is sit in your tube and then slowly slide back up the Slope! The Straps also make it perfect so the attendants can spin you (only if you ask nicely) as you are sliding down the slope.

After about three hours of snow tubing everyone but my brother and his girlfriend was getting tired. So we went into the large Ski lodge, which is only about ten feet from the snow tubing lanes. While inside the lodge we all enjoyed some nice hot Chocolate while sitting by the Fire place.

I am not a big fan of winter activities, But I have to say we all had a great time even if we didn’t make it the full five hours. Life can often get a little crazy and too fast paced, Every once in a while we all need some affordable old fashion family fun, (With a few modern convinces of course)
