For those people that want to go on an adventure safari to Kenya, Northern Kenya which has the Laikipia Ecosystem holds 2,000,000 acres of untainted wilderness. The wildreness has an incredible mix of wildlife which can be seen by road, camel, four by fours or horses.

The Laikipia area is an area in Kenya that is home to different communities that include the Maasai, Kikuyu and even Meru who live close to the Turkana, Samburu and Embu. These communities have come together and in partnership to work out a deal with settlers and ranchers and as a result have created a beautiful conservation haven.

The Laikipia Plateau stretches from Mount Kenya in the East to the Great Rift Valley in the West; it is home to unique plant life and specialized northern game like gerenuk, Grevy?s zebra and reticulated giraffe.

The human population lives in harmony with the big game. The animals have free access to the vast grasslands and the visitors to this area have total liberty which frees them from the restricting game park rules and regulations. Most of this area is privately or community owned. The advantage of this is that it allows guests to see game at nights or even riding horses at night in the bush.

For those that wish to visit the Laikipia plains, I would recommend that you visit some of these awesome retreats.

The Mukutan Retreat Lodge

This unique place overlooks the Mukutan Gorge that is located on the edge of the Great Rift Valley, and is located on the western side of Laikipia on the Laikipai Nature Conservancy. This is also the home to the author and conservationist Kuki Gallmann. Did you know that the word Mukutan means “meeting” in the local language.

Mukutan Retreat is an exclusive hideaway for discriminate travelers, providing simple yet extremely sophisticated comfort. Built in elegant African style, using local stone, native woods and papyrus thatch, each cottage is original in layout and d?cor.

Prices at this place go for about USD 2790 per person sharing a double room for the whole year. This price is inclusive of the return flights from Nairobi and all the interconnecting flights to the retreat, all park fees and obviously the accommodation.

Sabuk Lodge

Sabuk Lodge is perched high on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro river, in the Northern Frontier District, overlooking the Laikipia Plateau and Samburu land. This stunning wilderness destination is home to professional safari guide Verity Williams and her family. The Lodge has five open sided cottages, each one unique in design and d?cor, en-suite bathrooms, with private verandahs facing out over the river gorge 150 feet below. It is a fabulous family holiday destination.

There is plenty to enjoy while at Sabuk Lodge; Camel assisted walks and camel rides, game drives, Guided nature walks and insights into traditional bush craft skills and river swimming and fishing.

I believe Sabuk lodge is one of the finest lodges in Kenya. You will enjoy a picturesque view found in a luxurious setting in the wild.

The Loisaba Lodge

The Loisaba lodge is a unique lodge because it is described as an untamed bush as well as a cattle farm. Research on wildlife is conducted here and they work closely with the community that has lived on this land for centuries. Many people see it as Africa before fences were invented.

Loisaba lodge has been constructed from local wood, stone and thatch. Its rooms have large French windows that open up onto a private deck cantilevered off the escarpment. The views are remarkable because one is able to see a watering hole a few hundred feet away that draws in many wild animals.

The Loisaba lodge furniture is handmade. The lodge offers its guest a massage at its spa and also beauty treatment. Other facilities include a swimming pool, tennis court and bocce court. Another fabulous treat is that guests get to enjoy a romantic open air bubble bath that has a tranquil view of the wild Karissa Hills
